Welcome to Historic Oakwood Cemetery

Founded in 1869, Historic Oakwood Cemetery is located a short walking distance from the North Carolina State Capitol and the magnificent Governor's Mansion.  The cemetery is the eastern boundary of the Oakwood National Historic District which contains one of the largest collections of Victorian-era homes in the country.

Historic Oakwood Cemetery contains a special area within its 102 acres, the Confederate Cemetery, located on the original two and one-half acres given for that purpose by Henry Mordecai in 1867. Herein lie nearly 1,500 Confederate soldiers. Adjoined with the Confederate Cemetery is the impressive House of Memory. Erected in 1935 to commemorate those brave soldiers of the Confederacy, today its bronze memorial plaques recognize the many North Carolina service men and women who have served our country in times of conflict.

The grounds at Historic Oakwood Cemetery are open to visitors every day of the year, including holidays. During the spring, summer and fall seasons, the Oakwood Avenue gate is open from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM daily. During the winter months, (Eastern Standard Time) the gates open at 8:00 AM and close at 5:00 PM daily.
